BRAZILIAN ZOUK HISTORY

Brazilian zouk is a partner dance that began in Brazil in the ‘90s and is derived from lambada. Throughout the years, Brazilian zouk has been influenced in many ways, both musically and technically, and these influences came not only from Brazil but also from the various countries it traveled to.

This dance is mainly known for the upper body off-axis movements of the partner following the lead of the other partner, as well as for its counterweight techniques and tilted turns. Even though Brazilian zouk has its own basic steps and movements, they can be adapted to different sub-styles and rhythms, leaving a lot of room for improvisation and the creativity of zoukers. This dance continues to evolve as it gains popularity around the world.
